The needle on my tach jumps around. What's wrong?

  • A loose connection, in the power, ground or tach signal wires can cause this behavior.

  • Check to see that all connection points are solid and well-insulated from other wires.

  • If your vehicle has a high-performance, aftermarket ignition system, this can cause erratic readings.

  • Most ignition makers offer a tach filter or adapter that provides a clean tach signal. Installing one of these adapters will usually solve the problem.

  • Solid copper plug wires can radiate electrical "noise" which can cause erratic tach readings.

  • Installing resistor plug wires and/or shielding the green tach lead can reduce this interference.
